On October 23, 2024, I had the pleasure of speaking at the launch of the thematic line Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies at INET-md. The event took place at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon (Room 2, Congress Area), and brought together researchers, artists, and scholars engaged in critical and interdisciplinary approaches to gender and sexuality.
This new line aimed to promote scientific research on gender and sexuality across a wide range of musical activities, geographical contexts, and historical periods. It specifically focused on examining the historical processes that led to the exclusion of women and LGBTQIA+ individuals from dominant narratives, and called for the reevaluation of their contributions to various expressive practices — including music and dance — from an interdisciplinary perspective.
I was honoured to contribute with a presentation titled “Sinergias noturnas: Género e cultura em contextos urbanos”, in which I explored the intersections of gender and culture in urban nightscapes, drawing on my research at CIES-Iscte. My talk reflected on how nighttime cultural practices can serve as powerful lenses to examine questions of visibility, inclusion, and spatial justice.
The launch event created a valuable space for sharing ideas, presenting ongoing work, and envisioning future collaborations. It was co-coordinated by Marco Roque de Freitas and Inês Thomas Almeida, and reflected the commitment of INET-md to advancing inclusive, critical, and collaborative scholarship.
